A month of sustainable motoring – the numbers are in!

Following the first month of our six-month challenge to run The British Motor Show 5.0 litre V8 Mustang sustainably, we’ve had a look at the numbers that will tell us how it’s performing.
All winds and weather
The month threw every type of weather at us, so the car has been put through its paces!
Our friend and partner Coryton – they’re supplying us with their innovative Sustain fuel to keep the Mustang running – has crunched the numbers. These can be a little complicated, so we’ve broken them down into digestible chunks, so bear with us!
- 1,269 miles travelled at 26.4 mpg = 48 gallons / 218 litres
- Fuel density of 0.7647
- 1.677 Kg of fuel used
- Energy density = 43 MJ/Kg
- 7168 millijoules
What this means in the real world

Still with us? Let’s have a look at what these figures mean.
By running on Coryton Sustain, over those 1,269 miles, the Mustang has emitted 135 Kg of CO2. An equivalent regular fuel would produce 647 Kg of CO2. This means that our month of sustainable motoring produced 539 Kg less CO2!
But what does 135 Kg of CO2 mean in the real world? Well, taking your daily shower you emit over twice that amount. While it’s the same volume of CO2 you create sending emails for a year.
To give a further bit of perspective, an average person creates 1.7 Kg of CO2 every day, simply by going about their usual business, not including driving.
These comparisons give a bit of context to the stats, illustrating just how much better using sustainable fuel can be for the environment.
Running like a dream?
As important as they are, facts and figures are not the only part of the story. During the first month of the challenge, Sam Hard and Andy took the Mustang for its MOT. Here we would get an idea of how running on Coryton Sustain might be affecting performance. Would it have a negative effect on the parts essential to the safe and proper running of the engine?

Up next, service time

We’re delighted that eBay is partnering with The British Motor Show to deliver the project. eBay’s range of motoring parts and accessories will be essential to running the Mustang in a sustainable way.
It’s service time next month, and with a number of parts required, the ease of use and breadth of choice offered by eBay is going to be key.
If you’re not up to speed on our sustainable motoring challenge, have a look at the previous blog post, which goes into deeper detail about the project.
